ज्ञान-वचन · Shakti Peethas & the Devi

शिवः शक्त्या युक्तो यदि भवति शक्तः प्रभवितुम्।

शिव भी शक्ति से युक्त होकर ही सृजन में समर्थ होते हैं।

“Only when united with Shakti is Shiva able to create.”

— Adi Shankaracharya, Saundarya Lahari 1
The Mother of Dakshina Kashi

Jogulamba of Alampur जोगुलाम्बा

Where the Tungabhadra bends to meet the Krishna, Alampur — called the Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South) — holds the seat of Jogulamba, one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas. Here tradition holds that the upper teeth of Sati fell, and the Mother is worshipped in a fierce, seated form.

The fierce seated Devi

Jogulamba is enshrined in a terrible, powerful form, seated upon a corpse with scorpion, frog and lizard about her — the raw, untamed face of the Mother, deeply revered by Shakta sadhaks.

The Navabrahma temples

Around her stand the ninth-century Navabrahma temples — nine exquisite early Chalukyan shrines to Shiva — making Alampur a jewel of ancient Deccan temple art.

Katha & Scripture

Destroyed and reborn कथा

As Shiva bore Sati and Vishnu's chakra divided her, the upper teeth are said to have fallen at Alampur, and the Mother took her seat as Jogulamba. The shrine was destroyed in 1390 during invasions; the Devi was sheltered for centuries, and the temple was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 2005 — a return of the Mother to her ancient seat.

So Jogulamba is a Peeth of endurance: broken by history, yet restored by the devotion of her children.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मातृरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
yā devī sarva-bhūteṣu mātṛ-rūpeṇa saṁsthitā ।
namas-tasyai namas-tasyai namas-tasyai namo namaḥ ॥
“To the Devi who abides in all beings in the form of the Mother — salutations to her, again and again.”
— Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya), Chapter 5
